Highland Swing

for Alta Burns Cochrane

A steep dissecting climb between parallel

conifer clans changes the trajectory of the view

between one mountain and its range

but walking names the mountain

not the reach

or the language of the kin

But the strong calves motion

one step upon the last

calls the draw with its water

and all the waters we cross over

dripping thirsty from the center

breathing growing fuller

on our ways back to one another

crossing stone ways

under stoneledge solar fountains

Even stars which are themselves

the countless pathways

during Night’s gaze, washing over

come into view

then disappear

like the summit

not the end

of this journey.
